The BOOK

"GETTING CLOSE - Tempodrom" is a sensitive interplay of architectural photography, layout design, typography and printing. The minimally processed images are accompanied by a geometric font. The high-quality, high-contrast digital print enhances the luminosity of the photography with its rich black colour. The thread-stitched, uncoated paper references the surface structure of the roof construction and impresses with its extremely rough or super-smooth feel. The elements were selected carefully and in coordination with each other in order to do justice to the visual aesthetics and cultural significance of the iconic venue.

The DEVELOPMENT

The photographic encounter with the Tempodrom in Berlin-Kreuzberg was spontaneous. It was triggered by a conversation about architectural motifs in Berlin, in the course of which a photographer friend mentioned this building. The location was reached on foot from Park am Gleisdreieck. The striking white spikes above the treetops were recognisable even from a distance. The fascination for this symmetrical construction became clear as soon as I stepped onto the roof terrace. The series of images was created between 2021 and 2023 and photographed exclusively with an iPhone. The photographic representation of the building is characterised by a varied perspective, targeted lighting, balanced proximity and distance as well as a nuanced composition, creating a multi-faceted portrait of the impressive building. The 37 metre high Tempodrom was designed by gmp - Architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners and is particularly impressive due to its sculptural form and geometry. The patinated membrane lends the roof a fascinating materiality and emphasises the structural interpretation of the original circus tent. The white outer shell and the striking jagged crown are reminiscent of the cathedral in Brasília by architect Oscar Niemeyer. The terms "tent" and "cathedral" serve to describe the shape of the Tempodrom. They also reflect the development of the of the venue as one of the most important and popular in the capital. As a result, the use of these terms can be observed in a large number of newspaper and magazine articles.
